The South Central Railway (SCR) has rolled out GPS tracking devices to approximately 1,800 patrolmen stationed across three of its operational divisions. The initiative represents a modernization effort to improve real-time oversight of track maintenance personnel and their daily inspection activities.
Railway patrolmen are responsible for conducting regular inspections of railway tracks to identify and report various defects and maintenance issues. Their duties include checking for loose fish bolts, defects in switches and crossings, damaged fittings on girder bridges, and structural issues in open-top culverts. They also monitor sleeper conditions—identifying broken or burnt sleepers—and inspect plates and tie bars for damage or wear.
The introduction of GPS tracking devices will enable railway authorities to monitor the movement and positioning of patrolmen in real-time, ensuring comprehensive coverage of assigned track sections. This technological enhancement is expected to improve the efficiency of track inspections and maintenance scheduling across the affected divisions.
The SCR operates one of India's busiest railway networks, handling substantial passenger and freight traffic. The deployment of tracking technology reflects the railway's commitment to strengthening infrastructure safety and maintenance protocols through digital monitoring solutions.
