Sea otter revival transforms California estuary ecosystem, study finds

Sea otters recolonized California's Elkhorn Slough beginning in 1984, establishing themselves in an estuary severely degraded by decades of pollution and human activity. The arrival of the marine mammals set off a cascade of ecological changes that rippled through the slough's food web, ultimately revitalizing the damaged habitat.
Research tracking the ecosystem's transformation revealed that eelgrass beds—critical nurseries for fish and other marine life—expanded by approximately 600 percent following the otters' return. The expansion occurred as otters preyed on sea urchins and other invertebrates that had previously consumed the seagrass at unsustainable rates, allowing the vegetation to flourish.
Perhaps most striking, a subsequent study documented that marsh-edge erosion declined by an average of 69 percent in areas with established otter populations. Scientists attributed the stabilization to the otters' appetite for root-eating crabs, whose unchecked populations had previously destabilized the soil structure along the marsh perimeter.
