Sea turtles nest on Vietnam's Hon Cau island for sixth time this year

Sea turtles have returned to Hon Cau island six times since the start of 2026, underscoring the importance of the island as a critical breeding ground for the endangered marine species. The nestings have occurred across three beaches on the island—Nhat, Mui Tau, and Ba Hon—each representing a significant conservation milestone for the region.

In response to the nesting activity, provincial conservation authorities implemented a two-pronged protection strategy. Three nests containing a combined 246 eggs were carefully relocated to a dedicated incubation facility, where temperature and environmental conditions are closely monitored to maximize hatchling survival rates. The remaining three nests were left undisturbed at their original locations after being deemed sufficiently secure from human interference and natural threats.

The repeated nesting activity reflects broader regional efforts to restore sea turtle populations in South and Southeast Asian waters. Similar successes have been documented elsewhere in Vietnam, including recent releases of rehabilitated green sea turtles in Ca Mau and Quang Tri provinces, demonstrating a growing commitment to marine species recovery across the country.
