Search and rescue efforts are underway for two youths who disappeared in the Veligonda Project feeder canal on Saturday afternoon. The two individuals had reportedly entered the canal to wash their legs when they suddenly slipped into the deeper sections of the waterway.
According to officials, the youths lost their footing while wading in the shallow areas and were swept into the deeper waters before bystanders could intervene. The incident occurred in the afternoon, prompting immediate alerts to local authorities and rescue teams.
Rescue operations were suspended as darkness fell on Saturday evening. The superintendent of police indicated that coordinated search efforts would resume at dawn on Monday morning, with trained personnel and equipment deployed to locate the missing youths.
The Veligonda feeder canal, part of the larger irrigation infrastructure project, has witnessed similar incidents in the past. Local authorities have appealed to residents to exercise caution near the waterway and warned against entering the canal without proper safety measures, particularly in areas where depth varies significantly.
