Sebi green-lights Mahanadi Coalfields IPO as Coal India divests stake

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has granted approval for the Mahanadi Coalfields Limited IPO, facilitating Coal India's planned 10 percent stake sale in the subsidiary, according to regulatory filings. The development comes after Coal India submitted preliminary IPO documents with the markets regulator in September, detailing the proposed equity offering.

Mahanadi Coalfields, a key operating subsidiary of Coal India, is one of the nation's major coal production units. The IPO represents part of broader efforts by the government to unlock value from state-owned enterprises while maintaining strategic control over critical infrastructure sectors. Coal India, which holds dominant market position globally, operates multiple subsidiaries engaged in coal extraction and distribution across India.

The Sebi approval paves the way for the public share sale to proceed to subsequent regulatory and procedural stages. The offering is expected to provide public shareholders access to a significant coal production asset while generating capital for Coal India's parent operations and expansion initiatives.

The divestment aligns with the government's ongoing privatization and capital-raising agenda amid efforts to modernize India's energy infrastructure. Coal remains central to India's power generation mix, and Coal India continues to play a pivotal role in meeting domestic coal demand across power plants, industrial facilities, and other consumers.
