The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has rolled out a Credit Risk-o-Meter designed to provide investors with clearer visibility into the credit risk profiles of debt securities. The new tool is expected to standardize risk assessment across the debt market and enable retail and institutional investors to make more informed investment decisions based on transparent risk metrics.
Simultaneously, Sebi has relaxed regulatory norms governing private debt fundraising, intending to facilitate easier access to capital markets for corporates seeking non-public debt financing. The eased requirements are expected to reduce compliance burden on issuers while maintaining adequate investor protections, making the private debt segment more attractive for both borrowers and lenders.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has flagged concerns regarding elevated premiums observed in certain international exchange-traded funds, cautioning market participants about potential valuation risks. The regulatory actions collectively reflect Sebi's focus on balancing market efficiency with investor safeguards across both domestic debt and cross-border investment products.
Market analysts view these developments as steps toward deepening India's debt capital markets and attracting greater participation from sophisticated investors seeking diversified investment avenues. The Credit Risk-o-Meter is anticipated to particularly benefit the growing retail investor base seeking exposure to corporate debt instruments.
