SEBI Overhauls Closing Auction Framework With Separate 10-Minute Session
India's market regulator has introduced a revised Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework featuring a dedicated 10-minute trading window across all market days. The new structure brings changes to volume-weighted average price calculations and trading mechanics for closing trades.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has implemented a restructured Closing Auction Session framework designed to streamline end-of-day trading operations on the country's stock exchanges. The revised CAS will now function as a distinct, separate session lasting 10 minutes on all trading days, providing market participants with a clearly defined window for executing closing trades.
Under the new framework, the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) calculation methodology has been adjusted to align with the modified auction structure. These changes affect how closing prices are determined and recorded, with implications for various market participants including institutional investors, retail traders, and algorithmic trading systems that rely on closing price benchmarks.
The implementation aims to enhance market efficiency and transparency during the crucial closing period when significant trading activity often occurs. By establishing a dedicated, time-bound auction session separate from regular trading hours, SEBI seeks to provide greater certainty and standardization in price discovery at market close.
Market participants are advised to familiarize themselves with the revised timings and updated VWAP rules to ensure compliance and optimize their trading strategies accordingly. The framework applies uniformly across all trading days, eliminating previous variations in closing session procedures.
