Sebi permits celebrity endorsements for brands, bars product-specific promotions
India's market regulator has unveiled a unified advertising code that allows celebrities to endorse regulated financial entities at the brand level, while maintaining restrictions on promotion of specific financial products or services.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has notified a common advertisement code that establishes clearer guidelines for celebrity endorsements in the financial services sector. Under the new framework, well-known personalities are permitted to promote regulated entities such as banks, investment firms, and insurance companies as brands, marking a shift in the regulator's approach to celebrity-led marketing.
However, the code maintains a significant restriction: celebrities remain prohibited from endorsing specific financial products or services offered by these entities. This distinction aims to balance the marketing interests of regulated firms with consumer protection concerns, ensuring that celebrity endorsements do not mislead investors about particular investment products or financial instruments.
The unified code represents Sebi's effort to harmonize advertising standards across multiple categories of regulated entities under its jurisdiction. Previously, different regulations governed advertisements for various financial products, creating inconsistencies in celebrity endorsement rules. The new framework consolidates these requirements into a single, coherent standard.
Industry observers note that the regulation addresses growing concerns about the influence of celebrity endorsements on retail investors' financial decisions. By permitting brand-level promotions while restricting product-specific endorsements, Sebi seeks to allow financial entities to build brand recognition without encouraging uninformed investment choices based on celebrity association.
The notification is expected to provide regulated entities and advertising agencies with greater clarity on compliance requirements while maintaining investor safeguards in India's rapidly growing financial services market.
