Sebi pushes digital accessibility compliance deadline to end-January

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has extended the deadline for compliance with mandatory digital accessibility requirements to January 31, 2026, according to a circular issued on October 30.

The extension covers three key compliance elements: appointment of an auditor from the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP), conducting comprehensive accessibility audits of digital platforms, and implementing remediation measures based on audit findings.

These requirements stem from Sebi's earlier directives mandating that all regulated entities ensure compliance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and associated rules. The regulator granted the extension after receiving representations from market participants seeking additional time to complete the process.

Sebi noted that it had reviewed the progress made by regulated entities in implementing these measures before agreeing to the extension. The accessibility compliance framework represents the regulator's effort to ensure that India's financial markets infrastructure is accessible to persons with disabilities in accordance with national legislation.

The extension comes as part of Sebi's broader regulatory communications on the matter, with the regulator having issued multiple circulars since July to guide regulated entities through the compliance process.
