The Securities and Exchange Board of India and the Reserve Bank of India are jointly working to reduce friction in the registration process for Foreign Portfolio Investors, making it faster and more digital in nature. The initiative reflects a broader push to facilitate growing international capital inflows into Indian financial markets.
Key elements of the regulatory drive include digitising the FPI onboarding experience and rationalising Know Your Customer requirements. These measures are designed to lower administrative barriers while maintaining robust compliance standards. Officials have indicated that the focus extends to creating frameworks that support foreign investor participation across multiple asset classes.
In tandem with registration reforms, regulators are also exploring mechanisms to facilitate bond index inclusion, which could significantly expand the universe of foreign-accessible Indian fixed-income securities. Such moves would align with global benchmarks and potentially attract increased passive investment flows into Indian debt markets.
The coordinated approach by Sebi and RBI underscores the government's commitment to deepening capital market integration while maintaining regulatory oversight. As international investor appetite for Indian assets continues to grow, streamlining access points is seen as critical to sustaining momentum in capital flows and supporting domestic market development.
