The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has announced relaxed KYC requirements for non-resident Indians (NRIs) and overseas citizens of India (OCIs), permitting digital onboarding to accelerate their entry into Indian securities markets. The regulatory framework acknowledges the growing investment interest among diaspora communities while balancing compliance obligations.

Under the revised norms, NRIs and OCIs can now complete the customer identification process through digital means, eliminating certain in-person verification requirements that previously complicated account opening. The streamlined approach recognizes technological advancements in identity verification while maintaining adequate safeguards against financial crimes.

A key provision allows KYC records to remain portable, enabling investors to share their verified documentation with multiple intermediaries without redundant verification cycles. This portability mechanism reduces administrative friction and encourages broader participation in Indian equity and debt markets among overseas Indian investors.

The regulatory change reflects SEBI's broader push to modernize market access infrastructure and attract foreign investment from the diaspora. Industry observers expect the move to simplify wealth management and investment activities for NRIs and OCIs currently navigating complex onboarding procedures across brokers and custodians.
