Second Kumbal Perahera takes to Kandy streets tonight

The second Kumbal Perahera of the Kandy Esala Perahera is scheduled to parade through the historic city streets this evening, continuing the month-long Buddhist festival that draws devotees and tourists from across Sri Lanka and abroad.

The Kumbal Perahera represents a significant phase of the Esala Perahera, featuring ornate tusker elephants, traditional dancers, torch-bearers, and musicians in elaborate processions that honour the sacred relic of the Buddha enshrined at the Temple of the Tooth Relic.

The procession will follow its traditional route through the city, with participants adorned in vibrant traditional costumes and the lead elephants carrying ceremonial caparisons. The evening spectacle combines religious devotion with cultural pageantry, showcasing centuries-old traditions maintained by custodian families and religious authorities.

Road diversions and security arrangements have been implemented to manage crowds and ensure the safe passage of the procession. Spectators are advised to arrive early to secure viewing positions along the designated parade route.
