Securities transaction tax collections in India reached ₹40,214 crore in FY27, marking a robust 53% increase from the previous fiscal year. The substantial growth reflects the impact of enhanced tax rates that came into effect on April 1, aimed at moderating speculative trading in derivatives markets.
The government raised the STT rate on futures contracts to 0.05%, while increasing the levy on options premium turnover to 0.15%. These adjustments represented a significant tightening of the tax burden on derivatives trading, a move intended to cool excessive speculation and enhance market stability.
The revenue surge demonstrates the elasticity of STT collections to rate changes, with higher levies translating directly into increased government receipts. The increase comes at a time when policymakers have sought to balance the dual objectives of maintaining market dynamism while curbing speculative excess in derivative segments.
The FY27 collections reflect steady trading activity in Indian financial markets despite the elevated tax burden. Market analysts have noted that while higher STT rates typically cool trading volumes, the overall revenue impact has remained positive, suggesting continued robust participation in equity and derivatives markets.
