Security cordons prevent protesters from IMF, World Bank meeting site

Thai security forces cordoned off the area surrounding the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meeting venue in Bangkok on Wednesday, successfully preventing protesters from accessing the conference site.

Multiple protest groups had gathered in the Thai capital to demonstrate against the policies of the two international financial institutions. Demonstrators expressed concerns about economic governance, debt management, and the impact of IMF and World Bank programs on developing nations in the region.

Police established security checkpoints and vehicle barriers several blocks from the venue, directing pedestrian and vehicular traffic away from the conference location. Uniformed officers and plainclothes personnel managed the cordoned zones throughout the day as meetings continued inside.

Authorities did not report significant disruptions or altercations during the security operation. The IMF and World Bank gathering proceeded with the planned schedule despite the protest activity outside the perimeter.

The demonstrations reflected broader regional concerns about international financial institution policies and their influence on national economic decision-making across South and Southeast Asia.
