Selangor closes schools across multiple districts as air quality deteriorates

The Selangor State Education Department issued the directive on Monday as air quality levels in the region continued to decline, posing health risks to students and staff. Schools operating under government administration in the affected districts will remain shut, with authorities citing the need to protect the wellbeing of the school population.

The closure encompasses both primary and secondary institutions across the eight identified districts, which cover a significant portion of the state's populated areas. Parents and guardians have been advised to keep children indoors and limit outdoor activities during the period of poor air quality.

State officials have recommended that school administrators monitor air quality forecasts closely and await further instructions regarding the resumption of normal operations. The decision reflects growing concerns across the region about transboundary haze pollution, which has periodically affected Malaysian states during certain seasons.

Residents in affected areas have been urged to use air purifiers, wear N95 masks when venturing outdoors, and monitor the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings released by the Department of Environment. Authorities continue to coordinate with relevant agencies to address the deteriorating air quality situation.
