Selangor expands 'gated internet' scheme to public venues and private colleges

The Selangor government is broadening its 'internet berpagar' (gated internet) initiative to encompass public facilities and private tertiary institutions, building on positive results from an earlier pilot programme conducted in mosques across the state.

According to a state executive councillor, the expansion represents a deliberate effort to limit the circulation of negative and potentially harmful online material in public and educational spaces. The controlled internet access system allows administrators to filter and restrict access to certain websites and content categories deemed inappropriate.

The pilot phase demonstrated the feasibility of implementing such measures in houses of worship, where the system successfully managed information flow while maintaining essential connectivity. State officials believe the model can be effectively adapted for other public spaces including community centres, libraries, and government facilities.

The rollout to private institutions of higher learning signals an effort to extend protective measures across educational environments. Private colleges in Selangor will be invited to participate in the programme, with technical support provided by state authorities to facilitate implementation.

The initiative reflects growing concern among regional authorities about uncontrolled digital content in shared public spaces. Officials have indicated that participation from public venues and private institutions will be voluntary, with interested parties able to apply for system installation and management support from the state.
