Selangor explores retention ponds, drainage fixes for flood-prone areas

The Selangor state government is undertaking detailed assessments to pinpoint critical areas requiring retention pond installations and drainage improvements in three major flood-affected regions, according to a state executive councillor.

The three-pronged approach targets Shah Alam, Klang and Kajang, communities that have experienced recurring drainage and flooding challenges. State officials are examining hydrological data and existing infrastructure to determine optimal locations for the proposed retention facilities.

Retention ponds serve as temporary water storage during heavy rainfall, reducing downstream flooding by gradually releasing accumulated water into drainage systems. Combined with drainage upgrades, the infrastructure improvements aim to enhance the regions' capacity to handle intense precipitation events.

The initiative reflects growing efforts by Selangor authorities to address persistent flood vulnerabilities across the state's urbanised areas. The comprehensive study phase is expected to inform subsequent phases of planning and implementation for the drainage enhancement project.

State officials have not yet announced timelines for project commencement or estimated costs associated with the proposed infrastructure upgrades.
