Selangor Islamic Authority Confirms Khalwat Arrest of Politician

The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) confirmed on Tuesday that enforcement officers conducted a khalwat operation resulting in the arrest of two individuals, one of whom holds political office. The operation took place at approximately 6pm on Monday.

Khalwat, the Islamic legal term for close proximity between unrelated members of the opposite sex, is an offence under Shariah law in Malaysia. The arrests follow JAIS's routine enforcement activities across the state.

The religious authority did not immediately disclose the identities of those arrested or provide additional details regarding the circumstances of the operation. Such enforcement actions are part of ongoing efforts by state Islamic departments to ensure compliance with Shariah regulations.

The incident comes amid continued public scrutiny of khalwat enforcement in Malaysia, with civil society groups occasionally raising concerns about enforcement methods and privacy considerations. JAIS has previously defended its operations as necessary to uphold Islamic principles within the state.
