SHAH ALAM — The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) has firmly denied allegations of a deliberate setup in connection with the khalwat detention of Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the former political aide to Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari.

Mais officials stated that enforcement actions against khalwat—close proximity between unmarried individuals of opposite sex—are conducted fairly and without regard to an individual's position or connections. The council emphasised that Islamic religious law in Selangor is applied uniformly across all segments of society.

The denial comes as the case has drawn public attention following Nik Nazmi's detention for alleged khalwat offences. Mais reiterated that no person enjoys exemption from Islamic religious regulations, and that all enforcement activities are carried out in accordance with established procedures and legal provisions.

The council's statement underscores the sensitivity surrounding high-profile cases involving individuals with political connections, particularly those working in government circles. Mais has sought to demonstrate its institutional independence and commitment to impartial enforcement of Islamic law in the state.
