Selangor to tighten flood safeguards in new development approvals

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari announced plans to strengthen flood prevention protocols by implementing stricter conditions on future development approvals across the state. The new review framework aims to address recurring flooding issues by ensuring developments incorporate adequate water management infrastructure.

Under the revised approval system, property developers may be obligated to build temporary water retention facilities on their projects as a condition of development consent. These measures are intended to reduce water runoff and minimise flood impact on surrounding communities during heavy rainfall periods.

The state government will simultaneously move to remove illegal structures currently situated in flood-prone areas. Amirudin said these unauthorised buildings contribute to drainage obstruction and increase flood vulnerability in affected zones.

The policy represents an escalation of Selangor's efforts to mitigate annual flooding, which has affected thousands of residents and caused significant economic losses. Officials stated that the new development standards would be applied consistently across all future projects requiring state approval.
