Sembcorp's India renewables unit seeks $500m in second IPO bid

The Indian renewable energy unit of Singapore-listed Sembcorp Industries has filed documents with India's market regulator for an initial public offering valued at approximately $500 million, according to regulatory filings. The move represents the Temasek-backed company's second attempt to bring the subsidiary to market, following an earlier listing effort that was not completed.

Sembcorp, a conglomerate with interests in utilities, energy and waste management across Asia, has been seeking to unlock value in its Indian renewables portfolio amid growing investor appetite for clean energy assets in the subcontinent. India's renewable energy sector has attracted significant capital flows as the country pursues its ambitious targets for solar and wind capacity expansion.

The company's Indian operations have expanded significantly in recent years, capitalising on India's push towards renewable energy and decarbonisation. A successful listing would allow Sembcorp to monetise its Indian renewables holdings while maintaining an operational stake in the business.

The IPO filing comes as major energy companies across Asia reassess their portfolios and consider strategic divestments in high-growth renewable markets. India remains a focal point for such activity, given its large addressable market and supportive regulatory environment for clean energy investments.
