Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran has signalled the conglomerate's commitment to India's semiconductor ambitions, emphasizing that the long-term strategic importance of chip manufacturing outweighs concerns about near-term financial performance.

"Whether we will get it right and meet the numbers in two years or three years is not the point," Chandrasekaran said at a Bloomberg event. "The point is that chips are going to be fundamentally required."

His comments reflect the broader Indian industry consensus that semiconductor manufacturing represents a critical infrastructure investment for the nation's technological sovereignty and economic growth. India has pursued aggressive policies to attract chip manufacturers through production-linked incentive schemes and government support.

The Tata group, India's largest conglomerate, is among key players evaluating significant commitments to semiconductor fabrication. Chandrasekaran's remarks suggest the company is calibrating expectations around profitability timelines while maintaining confidence in the sector's structural necessity for India's future.

The statement underscores how Indian industrial leaders are framing semiconductor investments as strategic imperatives rather than conventional commercial ventures, potentially reshaping how such projects are evaluated against traditional return-on-investment benchmarks.
