Senate explores curbs on violent social media content following school incidents

MANILA—Senators raised the prospect of disabling algorithmic promotion and removing monetization from violent and sexually graphic material during a Friday hearing focused on protecting minors from harmful online content. The discussion came as lawmakers examined the 2027 budget allocation for the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board, which oversees content regulation in the Philippines.

The timing of the proposal reflects growing concern among policymakers about the link between online material and recent incidents of violence in schools. Several cases have drawn public attention to the role that online games and social media may play in influencing young people's behavior.

Senators specifically discussed limiting the algorithmic amplification of such content and cutting revenue streams for creators who produce violent or sexually explicit material. The measures aim to reduce the visibility and financial incentive for producing content that may negatively affect young viewers.

The MTRCB's proposed budget of P49.99 million for next year provided the framework for broader discussions about content moderation and youth protection in the digital age. Lawmakers indicated they would continue exploring regulatory options that balance free expression with the safety of Filipino children.
