MANILA — The Senate impeachment court on Monday ruled to permit testimony concerning P4.4 billion in financial transactions linked to Vice President Sara Duterte and her spouse, lawyer Manases Carpio, after rejecting a defense motion to prevent an Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) witness from presenting evidence.

The decision allows the AMLC representative to testify regarding records submitted by banks and other covered institutions involved in the transactions under scrutiny. The defense had sought to block this testimony, but the court determined the evidence relevant to the proceedings.

The P4.4-billion financial trail represents a significant portion of the evidence being examined in the ongoing impeachment case against the Vice President. The court's ruling enables prosecutors to present documentation of the transactions through the AMLC witness, a move that could substantiate allegations under investigation.

The impeachment proceedings against Vice President Duterte continue as the Senate works through multiple motions and evidentiary disputes. Monday's ruling is expected to accelerate the presentation of financial documentation central to the case.
