Senate impeachment court clarifies 11-vote threshold for Duterte conviction

MANILA — The Senate impeachment court has clarified the voting requirement for convicting Vice President Sara Duterte, stating that senator-judges need 11 votes to overturn the 16-vote threshold, according to court spokesperson Atty. Reginald Tongol.

Tongol made the clarification on Saturday, walking back earlier remarks issued Friday in which he indicated that a majority of 10 votes would be sufficient to change the threshold in the event that some senators are absent.

The distinction between the two thresholds has significant implications for the ongoing impeachment proceedings against the Vice President. The Senate impeachment court operates under specific constitutional and procedural rules governing the number of votes required for conviction and any procedural changes.
