MANILA — The Senate impeachment court has clarified the voting threshold needed to convict Vice President Sara Duterte, resolving confusion from a previous statement. Senate impeachment court spokesperson Atty. Reginald Tongol said Saturday that senator-judges need 11 votes to overturn the 16-vote conviction threshold.
The clarification followed Tongol's earlier statement on Friday in which he indicated that a simple majority of 10 votes would be sufficient to change the threshold, provided some senators were absent from proceedings. The contradicting statements prompted the court to issue the updated guidance.
The 16-vote threshold requires that conviction of an impeached official demands support from roughly two-thirds of the 24 senator-judges. The clarification of voting requirements comes as the impeachment court continues deliberations on the case against the Vice President.
