MANILA – The House prosecution panel expects the Senate impeachment court to deliver a ruling on Vice President Sara Duterte's case within the next two months, according to Manila Representative Joel Chua, a member of the prosecution team.

Chua said the streamlined timeline became possible after prosecutors narrowed the scope of charges against Duterte. The case now hinges exclusively on the article alleging unexplained wealth, a significantly reduced focus from the original complaint.

The House of Representatives impeached Duterte in December 2024, citing multiple grounds including constitutional violations and culpable violation of the Constitution. The subsequent narrowing of charges reflects deliberations within the prosecution panel on which allegations carry sufficient weight for Senate consideration.

The Senate impeachment court, which convenes as a special tribunal during such proceedings, has been hearing arguments from both the prosecution and Duterte's defense team. Legal observers note that impeachment trials can extend over months, though the prosecution's target deadline suggests both parties may be moving toward expedited proceedings.

Duterte has consistently denied all allegations and maintains her innocence. The Vice President's legal team is expected to continue presenting counterarguments as the Senate court prepares to deliberate before year-end.
