MANILA — The Senate impeachment court on Thursday granted the House prosecution panel's motion to subpoena officials from several financial institutions and the Bureau of Internal Revenue during the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.
The decision came as lead prosecutor Batangas Representative Gerville Luistro advanced the prosecution's case, seeking access to financial records and testimony from banking and insurance sector representatives that prosecutors argue are relevant to their accusations.
The subpoenas represent a significant expansion of witness testimony in the high-profile trial, which has captivated the nation's attention since its inception. Financial records and institutional knowledge from banks, insurers, and the BIR are expected to provide documentary evidence supporting the prosecution's arguments.
The impeachment trial of Vice President Duterte has drawn scrutiny from various quarters, with the court continuing to hear motions and set procedural guidelines as the case progresses through the Senate.
No date for the officials' appearance before the court has been announced, though the subpoenas are expected to move the trial toward its evidentiary phase.
