MANILA — The Senate impeachment court on Tuesday lifted the sub judice rule on three articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte, permitting wider public discourse on the withdrawn charges.
The court's decision came after the House prosecution panel moved to withdraw impeachment articles I, III, and IV, which had alleged misuse of confidential funds, bribery, and grave threats respectively. The sub judice rule, which restricts public commentary on pending legal matters, had previously applied to these charges.
With the removal of the restriction, the allegations contained in the three articles may now be discussed openly in media and public forums without legal constraints. The lifting of the rule does not affect any remaining articles still under consideration by the impeachment court.
The Senate impeachment proceedings continue to focus on the charges that remain active before the court. The court's action underscores the distinction between withdrawn articles and those still pending in the high-profile case.
