Senate panel pushes to delay barangay elections to November 2028

MANILA — Senate panels on local government and finance have proposed moving the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) forward by two years, recommending the polls be held in the second week of November 2028 rather than the originally scheduled first Monday of November 2026.

The joint Senate committees submitted Committee Report No. 77 on Tuesday outlining the rationale for the electoral postponement. The proposal would extend the current terms of barangay officials and youth council representatives, requiring legislative action to amend existing electoral laws and timelines.

The recommendation reflects ongoing congressional discussions regarding the implementation capacity and preparation requirements for conducting nationwide barangay-level elections.
