MANILA – Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian dismissed claims on Sunday that impeachment court presiding officer Sen. Francis "Chiz" Escudero deliberately blocked former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV from appearing before the court to testify.

Trillanes had alleged that Escudero's decision not to issue him a subpoena amounted to obstruction of his right to participate in the impeachment proceedings. The allegation surfaced amid ongoing tensions within the Senate regarding the conduct of high-profile impeachment cases.

Gatchalian stated there was no factual basis to Trillanes' claims, suggesting the matter was procedural rather than obstructive. He emphasized that decisions regarding witness subpoenas follow established court protocols and are made according to the rules governing impeachment proceedings.

The dispute underscores broader concerns about transparency and fairness in the Senate's impeachment processes. Trillanes has been an outspoken figure in Philippine politics, while Escudero presides over impeachment matters in his capacity as a senior senator.

No immediate response from Escudero was made available regarding Gatchalian's statement.
