MANILA – The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food and Agrarian Reform has initiated a formal probe into the persistently low farmgate prices affecting hog and poultry producers across the Philippines, even as input costs continue climbing.
Chairperson Senator Kiko Pangilinan filed Senate Resolution No. 726 on Thursday to direct the committee's investigation into the price squeeze affecting the livestock sector. The resolution seeks to identify policy measures and mechanisms that could shield local producers' profit margins amid the challenging market conditions.
The inquiry addresses concerns that farmgate prices remain suppressed despite increasing expenses for animal feed and other production inputs, leaving hog and poultry farmers struggling with reduced profitability. The committee will examine factors contributing to the price disparity and explore potential interventions to stabilize the sector.
The investigation is expected to assess the full scope of the pricing problem across Philippine livestock production regions and develop recommendations for legislative or regulatory action to support local producers facing margin compression.
