MANILA — Senators are moving to examine a major rice smuggling attempt that underscores ongoing vulnerabilities in the country's agricultural import controls, according to Sen. Francis Pangilinan.
The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food, and Agrarian Reform has scheduled a hearing to investigate the incident involving Vietnamese rice valued at around P700 million. Pangilinan flagged the case as emblematic of deeper enforcement challenges within the agriculture sector.
The senator expressed concern that despite repeated smuggling incidents, authorities have struggled to secure convictions against high-profile smugglers. The attempted shipment highlights potential gaps in border security protocols and customs inspection procedures.
The planned inquiry is expected to examine how such large-scale smuggling operations can evade detection and what additional measures may be needed to strengthen the country's defenses against illegal rice imports. Officials are also likely to review whether existing penalties and enforcement mechanisms are sufficient to deter future attempts.
