MANILA — The Philippine Senate has flagged its intention to carefully review the substantial realignments made by the House of Representatives in crafting the proposed P7.2-trillion national budget for 2027, with Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian noting that the nearly P200 billion in adjustments warrant close scrutiny.

Gatchalian made the statement Tuesday, one day after the House passed the General Appropriation Bill containing the contested realignments. The Senate President characterized the amount as significant, underscoring the upper chamber's commitment to examining how the funds were redistributed across various budget categories.

The realignments represent modifications to budget allocations originally proposed in the administration's budget submission, a standard part of the legislative budget process. However, the scale of the adjustments—representing nearly 2.8 percent of the total proposed budget—has prompted Senate leadership to flag the need for detailed scrutiny.

As the Senate moves into its own deliberations on the 2027 budget, lawmakers are expected to request detailed explanations from House members regarding the rationale behind the significant realignments and their impact on various government agencies and programs.
