Senator defends Rayer's right to seek answers on Perlis temple demolition

Senator P. Lingeshwaran said Thursday that questioning government actions is a legitimate exercise of democratic rights, not a form of provocation or sedition. His comments come amid tensions between Rayer and Perlis state leadership over the demolition of a Hindu place of worship.

Lingeshwaran argued that responsibility for explaining the demolition lies with the state Mentri Besar, rather than with religious authorities. He contended that seeking clarification on administrative decisions falls within the purview of elected representatives and the public.

The remarks underscore broader questions about governmental transparency and the role of legislators in scrutinising state actions. Rayer, the Jelutong MP, has been vocal in demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding the temple's removal.

The Perlis government has faced mounting calls to provide detailed justification for the demolition, with critics arguing that the lack of clear communication has fuelled public concern. Officials have not yet provided a comprehensive statement addressing the main grievances raised.
