A senator has put forward 11 recommendations aimed at strengthening the healthcare workforce across Sabah and Sarawak, citing the need for targeted measures to address recruitment and retention challenges in East Malaysia.
Dr RA Lingeshwaran's proposals focus on making medical and allied health positions more attractive to qualified professionals. Among the key areas identified are enhanced financial incentives, improved residential facilities and clearer pathways for career progression in the region's healthcare system.
The initiative comes as East Malaysian states grapple with persistent healthcare staffing shortages, which have been attributed partly to healthcare workers' preference for positions in Peninsular Malaysia or overseas. Officials have acknowledged that competitive remuneration packages and better living conditions are essential to retain talent in remote and less developed areas.
The 11-point plan is expected to be deliberated further by relevant stakeholders, including the federal health ministry and state governments, as policymakers seek sustainable solutions to strengthen the healthcare sector across Sabah and Sarawak.
