Sengkang Town Council restricts pickleball play near homes

Sengkang Town Council has banned pickleball activities on specific courts situated in proximity to residential units, citing noise and disturbance concerns from nearby residents. The restriction represents an effort by the town council to manage competing demands between recreational activities and residential amenities in the estate.

Pickleball, a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, has grown in popularity across Singapore in recent years. However, the sport generates considerable noise during play, particularly when balls strike paddles and courts, which can be disruptive in densely populated residential areas.

The town council's decision to restrict play on affected courts reflects growing tensions between recreational users and residents in Housing and Development Board estates. The selective ban targets courts positioned too close to residential blocks while allowing continued play on courts situated at safer distances from homes.

The restrictions underscore the challenges town councils face in maintaining vibrant community spaces while addressing legitimate livability concerns. Residents and recreational groups in Sengkang will need to adapt to the new guidelines to ensure the sport can continue to flourish in appropriate locations within the estate.
