Senior scientist Senarathne appointed head of National Botanical Gardens
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the appointment of M. M. D. J. Senarathne as Director General of the Department of National Botanical Gardens. Senarathne, the most senior officer in Grade I of the Sri Lanka Scientific Service, takes on the role following ministerial recommendation.

The Cabinet decision, endorsed on the recommendation of the Minister of Environment, elevates Senarathne to lead the department responsible for Sri Lanka's premier botanical institutions. His appointment recognizes his standing as the highest-ranking officer within the Grade I tier of the country's scientific service cadre.
The National Botanical Gardens, which operates multiple facilities across the island including the renowned Peradeniya Gardens, plays a central role in Sri Lanka's conservation efforts, research activities, and horticultural development. The department oversees botanical research, plant conservation programmes, and manages public botanical collections that attract both local and international visitors.
Senarathne's extensive experience within the scientific service positions him to advance the department's mandate during a period when botanical institutions face increasing demands for environmental research and conservation work. The appointment is expected to take effect immediately following formal Cabinet approval.
