Sentencing scheduled for acupuncturist in Rs47.6m cheque fraud case
A Nugegoda court has set October 28 for sentencing of a Chinese acupuncture practitioner found guilty of issuing dishonoured cheques worth Rs47.6 million to a businessman across four separate fraud cases.

The Nugegoda Additional Magistrate's Court, presided over by Additional Magistrate Sanjaya Lakmal Jayasinghe, scheduled the sentencing date during proceedings on October 15. The accused, identified as Prasanna Deshapriya, was convicted on charges related to fraud involving the issuance of dishonoured cheques.
According to court records, Deshapriya allegedly defrauded a businessman by issuing cheques totalling Rs47.6 million that were subsequently dishonoured. The case comprises four separate charges filed against the acupuncture practitioner in connection with the fraudulent transactions.
Deshapriya's conviction followed legal proceedings in which the court found sufficient evidence to establish guilt on the fraud charges. The October 28 sentencing date will determine the appropriate punishment following the guilty verdict.
The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding cheque fraud cases in Sri Lanka, where dishonoured cheques continue to feature prominently in financial crime prosecutions.
