Seoul alarmed as Trump's Iran pivot threatens US security commitment

South Korean officials expressed concern Wednesday following Trump administration orders to reduce joint military drills, signalling a potential shift in US security priorities amid heightened tensions with Iran. The directive, which calls for scaling back training operations on the Korean Peninsula, has revived longstanding anxieties in Seoul about the reliability of American defence commitments that have underpinned regional stability for seven decades.

The decision comes as the Trump administration navigates diplomatic tensions with Tehran, with officials suggesting a reallocation of military resources and attention. South Korean defence analysts warned that reduced joint exercises could weaken readiness against North Korea and signal waning US commitment to the peninsula at a critical juncture.

South Korea's Ministry of Defence moved quickly to engage with Washington, seeking clarification on the scope and duration of any changes to existing defence arrangements.
