Seoul pledges firm response to North Korea's border military threats

South Korea said Tuesday it would respond with resolve should North Korea implement threatened military measures along their shared border, as fresh tensions grip the Korean Peninsula.

Seoul's statement represents a hardening stance against Pyongyang's recent declarations to strengthen its military posture in the demilitarised zone separating the two countries. South Korean defence officials indicated that any provocative actions would trigger an immediate and proportionate response from Seoul's armed forces.

The renewed bellicosity reflects the fragile state of inter-Korean relations, with military buildups and threatening rhetoric becoming increasingly common. North Korea has periodically threatened to reinforce its border defences, citing security concerns, while South Korea maintains a robust military presence in the region.

Seoul reiterated its commitment to maintaining security on the peninsula while calling for restraint from the North. The two countries remain technically at war, having never signed a peace treaty following the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended only with an armistice agreement.
