Seoul taxi overcharging complaints from foreigners surge past 6,000

Seoul authorities have documented 6,000 complaints of taxi overcharging from foreign visitors across a five-year period, underscoring ongoing concerns about fare manipulation in the city's transport network. The complaints represent a sustained problem affecting tourists and international business travellers navigating the South Korean capital's taxi system.

In response to the issue, Seoul's municipal government introduced a 500,000-won (approximately S$479) reward scheme to incentivise reporting of taxi overcharging incidents. However, the programme has seen minimal uptake, with no claims recorded since 2021, suggesting either improved compliance or a lack of awareness among potential informants.

The persistence of overcharging complaints raises questions about enforcement mechanisms and driver accountability in Seoul's taxi sector. Foreigners may face language barriers or unfamiliarity with local fare structures when identifying and reporting violations, potentially limiting their willingness to participate in formal complaint procedures.

Taxi overcharging remains a common concern for international visitors across major Asian cities. Seoul's authorities have not publicly announced additional measures to address the problem or promote the existing reward scheme among foreign travellers.
