South Korea has signalled its willingness to take additional steps if Ukraine does not comply with its demand for a public apology over the handling of sensitive information related to South Korean prisoners of war held by Russian forces.
The warning comes as diplomatic tensions rise between Seoul and Kyiv over what Seoul characterizes as a breach of confidentiality protocols. South Korean officials have emphasised that public disclosure of information concerning POWs poses serious risks to the safety and security of the detainees' families back home, particularly given North Korea's history of targeting individuals with international connections.
According to Seoul's position, maintaining discretion around POW-related matters is essential for protecting relatives from potential repercussions. The South Korean government has stressed that such confidentiality agreements are standard practice in sensitive military and diplomatic negotiations.
The dispute underscores the complex diplomatic dynamics involving multiple parties in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with countries like South Korea navigating their own security concerns while maintaining support for Ukraine's defence efforts.
It remains unclear whether Ukraine will respond to South Korea's demand or what specific measures Seoul may implement if the situation remains unresolved.
