Sepang F1 debutants can master circuit quickly, says Yoong

Alex Yoong, Malaysia's only F1 driver, has backed first-time competitors at Sepang International Circuit to quickly grasp the track's complexities, dismissing concerns that the venue's lengthy absence from the international racing schedule could disadvantage debutants.

The circuit last hosted a Formula 1 race in 2017, leaving a significant gap in recent competitive experience for drivers unfamiliar with its characteristics. However, Yoong expressed confidence that competitors would master Sepang's technical demands from the opening lap itself, suggesting the circuit's layout remains learnable despite years away from the F1 calendar.

Sepang's return to the racing schedule marks a significant milestone for Malaysian motorsport. The 5.543-kilometre circuit, located near Kuala Lumpur, presents drivers with a variety of corners and straights requiring precision and adaptability—qualities that Yoong believes experienced competitors can develop rapidly during the initial stages of competition.

The circuit has long been recognised as a technically challenging venue, demanding strong braking control and consistent cornering precision. Yoong's assessment suggests that the fundamentals of circuit racing transcend the specific challenge of track familiarity, with professional drivers capable of extracting optimal performance through systematic learning during practice and qualifying sessions.
