Serian workplaces may stay open during haze crisis with safety measures

KUCHING — The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has signalled that offices and workplaces in Serian need not suspend operations entirely during haze emergencies, as long as they adopt sufficient health safeguards for their workforce.

The directive applies to government agencies, private companies, and other business establishments affected by air quality deterioration in the district. Rather than imposing blanket closures, authorities are allowing operations to continue with conditions attached, reflecting efforts to balance public health concerns with economic considerations.

Under the framework outlined by SDMC, workplaces must implement mandatory precautions to mitigate health risks associated with poor air quality. These measures are expected to include provision of protective equipment, improved ventilation systems, and monitoring of employee wellness during periods of elevated haze levels.
