The IT outage, which lasted 9.5 hours, was attributed to a "preventable lapse" by the service provider responsible for maintaining critical health information systems, Tan said. The disruption affected multiple public healthcare institutions across Singapore, creating significant operational challenges and requiring staff to manually reschedule thousands of patient visits.
Tan acknowledged that the incident "should not have happened", emphasising that the healthcare sector must maintain robust safeguards against such system failures. The Minister stressed the importance of service providers adhering to strict protocols and contingency measures to minimise disruption to patient care.
The Ministry of Health is expected to conduct a full review of the incident and implement additional measures to prevent similar outages in future. Patients whose appointments were affected have been contacted and offered alternative appointment slots.
The October 13 disruption marks a significant setback for Singapore's public healthcare infrastructure, which typically maintains high standards of system reliability. Authorities have indicated they will work closely with service providers to strengthen monitoring and response protocols for managing potential IT crises.
