Seven arrested in Hyderabad illegal lending racket targeting professionals

Hyderabad law enforcement has dismantled an illegal lending network operating in the Malkajgiri area, with police apprehending seven suspects accused of defrauding multiple victims through predatory lending practices. The gang allegedly operated by collecting substantial advance interest payments and obtaining blank signed cheques from borrowers as security, a method commonly used to coerce repayment or facilitate unauthorized withdrawals.

Investigators identified a retired physician among the victims who approached the group seeking funds to purchase an artificial intelligence-based cancer-detection system for professional use. The accused allegedly seized the woman's car and sport utility vehicle as collateral, according to police records.

The lending operation targeted middle and upper-income professionals, exploiting their need for quick capital by imposing exorbitant interest rates and extracting financial instruments that provided the lenders with leverage over victims. Police indicated the arrests followed a formal complaint and subsequent investigation into the network's operations.

The Malkajgiri police have registered cases against the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code addressing fraud and illegal financial transactions. Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify additional victims and recover seized assets, officials said.
