Seven districts placed on high alert as landslide warnings issued

Seven districts across Sri Lanka's central and southwestern regions are under landslide early warning status as of 16:00 hours on Tuesday, 4 November, continuing until 16:00 hours on 5 November. The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) has classified the alerts as LEVEL II (AMBER), indicating elevated risk in vulnerable locations. The districts placed under warning include Badulla, Kandy, Kegalle, Matale, Matara, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura. Divisional Secretariat divisions surrounding Kotapola and nearby areas have been specifically flagged as higher-risk zones requiring close monitoring.

The amber-level alert system prompts residents and local authorities to remain vigilant and prepared for potential landslide activity. Residents in hilly terrain, particularly those in settlements near steep slopes or unstable hillsides, are urged to monitor weather updates closely and be ready to relocate if conditions deteriorate. The NBRI continues to assess meteorological and soil stability factors to determine whether alert levels require adjustment.

Local authorities and disaster management officials have been notified to ensure emergency response capabilities are in place. The general public in affected areas is advised to avoid unnecessary travel on vulnerable routes and to report any signs of ground movement or unusual soil conditions to relevant authorities immediately.
