KUALA LUMPUR — Air quality deteriorated across Malaysia on Monday morning, with the Department of Environment recording unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) levels in seven locations nationwide. The readings marked a concerning start to the week for residents in the affected areas, which included Cheras and Putrajaya in the Klang Valley, as well as Johan Setia in Selangor.
The API scale classifies readings above 100 as unhealthy, indicating that vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions face heightened health risks during exposure. Authorities typically advise the public to limit outdoor activities and use air purifiers indoors when unhealthy levels are recorded.
Monitoring data indicated that transboundary pollution and local emission sources contributed to the degraded air conditions. The Department of Environment continued real-time tracking of air quality levels across the country, with forecasts expected to show improvements as wind patterns shift throughout the week.
Residents in affected areas were advised to check official air quality updates regularly and take appropriate precautions. The ministry urged industries and vehicle owners to comply with emission standards to help maintain air quality across the region.
