Seven people have died from rabies in Malaysia this year, according to health authorities tracking the infectious disease. Six of the fatalities were reported in Sarawak, while one case was confirmed in Kedah, representing a geographical spread of the virus across the country.
Rabies remains a significant public health concern in Malaysia, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where human contact with infected animals is more frequent. The disease, transmitted through bites or scratches from infected animals such as dogs and bats, is almost invariably fatal once symptoms appear.
Health officials have urged residents to exercise caution around stray or unfamiliar animals and to seek immediate medical attention following any potential exposure. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) administered promptly after exposure can be highly effective in preventing the disease from developing.
The distribution of cases across different states underscores the need for continued vigilance and public awareness campaigns regarding rabies prevention and animal bite management throughout the country.
